Reports indicated that Paul was getting $40 million just for getting in the ring, and that Tyson set to take home $20 million of his own.
The much-anticipated Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight at AT&T Stadium on Friday night generated plenty of buzz but, well, it didn’t exactly live up to expectations.
While the fight technically wasn’t free, anyone with a Netflix subscription could stream it, which was a pretty good deal given that Netflix is far cheaper than most high-profile boxing pay-per-views. Still, some viewers couldn’t help but gripe about buffering issues during the livestream.
The exact earnings for Mike Tyson and Jake Paul from their fight remain somewhat unclear, as neither the fighters nor Netflix have officially disclosed the figures. However, a combination of reports, expert analysis, and recent trends in boxing payouts offers a rough estimate.
Sources suggest that Jake Paul was set to earn around $40 million just for stepping into the ring, while Tyson’s payout was reportedly $20 million. Paul himself referenced the $40 million figure in a previous press conference, even going so far as to offer to bet his purse ahead of the fight.
“I’m here to make $40 million and knock out a legend,” Paul said back in August.
USA Today cited boxing industry experts who estimated Tyson’s take-home to be around $20 million, though Tyson didn’t confirm that figure during a 2023 interview with Jimmy Kimmel.
While these numbers are impressive, they pale in comparison to some of the sport’s most massive paydays. For instance, in 2017, UFC star Conor McGregor earned $30 million for his high-profile fight with boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, who took home a staggering $100 million, according to The Telegraph.
Of course, the Tyson vs. Paul fight was a different kind of matchup—neither fighter is an active professional in the traditional sense—but it still proved to be a highly lucrative affair for both men.
